5 technical ways to detect “fake accounts”
A report prepared by the Communications Regulatory Authority stated that it is possible to verify fake accounts, by searching for the authentication tag of the account, and searching and checking the content of the account itself, pointing out that these accounts are usually dormant for long periods, and then they are activated to perform a specific role.
The authority has identified five main ways through which fictitious accounts can be detected, the first of which is to verify the “account name” as the most prominent indicators of a person’s identity, especially since the names of some accounts consist of mixed letters and words that may be meaningless, or may include spelling errors, noting the importance of Comparison between the account name and the “URL” or account page link, to make sure if the account name in the link matches the account name on the platform in which it is located.
She explained that the second method is to review the “account picture”, since most of the fake accounts carry “low-resolution” personal photos, and then the image can be saved and searched using the reverse search technology provided by search engines, to see the image and similar images to it, the date of its publication and the source of publication, She pointed out that the third method is to verify the “date of the account.” If it is recent, that is, within days, weeks, or even a few months, the possibility should be put in place that this account is fake.
The fourth way to detect fake accounts is related to reviewing the “number of followers.” If the account follows many more accounts than the accounts you follow, this may be an indication of its falsity, by using automated follow-up programs to reach the largest number of people, while the last method is Resorting to the “bot meter” website, which helps detect fake accounts on the Twitter platform, which is the platform in which the largest number of fake accounts and the fake mechanism is noticed, by placing the name of the account in the search box of the mentioned site, provided that the site analyzes the chosen account, It gives results based on a scale from one to five.
