President of RTVE and presenter on the public channel.

Elena Sánchez accredits an unprecedented double professional aspect for a maximum person in charge of the corporation, as it will be possible to verify from this Thursday, October 13 in La 2.

Encuentros

is a 13-edition format that Sánchez recorded last summer, when she was a director of RTVE.

Now, with the departure of José Manuel Pérez Tornero from the presidency, this journalist is acting president of the chain's Board of Directors, waiting for a boost from the Government so that she can enjoy fully executive functions.

In fact, this interview space served as an attempt to forge a certain understanding between Elena Sánchez and Pérez Tornero, a way to redirect their harmony and facilitate decision-making at the top.

In this Board of Directors of 10 people (9 since the forced resignation of that professor), these two members have rarely coincided in voting, despite the fact that both were appointed at the proposal of the PSOE.

So much so that Sánchez has stood out during the mandate of her predecessor for a critical stance towards his management, which she has finally replaced with the approval of the Government.

Sánchez held meetings with representatives from the world of culture, such as the renowned painter Antonio López or the writer Antonio Muñoz Molina, and this series of in-depth talks will be the ones that make up the format, which in principle could last on the air until the end of year.

This Thursday, around 11:00 p.m., the space debuts, a project that was advanced by EL MUNDO.

Jesús Marchamalo co-hosts Encounters with Sánchez.

The presenter accumulates 38 years of work within the public and is heading towards retirement age, since at the end of this year she would turn 65. This program served as recognition of her career, a kind of

farewell to the cameras

, despite given the circumstance that the journalist combined it with her work within the Board of Directors of RTVE.

This particular coincidence has become extreme now that Sánchez also chairs that same Council.

This journalist has presented and directed newscasts and different programs, in addition to participating in spaces such as Informe weekly, Chronicles or Essentials.

However, in recent times she has acquired other positions of great command and little visibility: she created the body for the Defense of the audience and directed it from 2008 to 2014;

in August 2018, she was appointed general secretary of the corporation -until her differences with the sole provisional administrator Rosa María Mateo led her to leave-;

in 2021, she joined the Board of Directors of RTVE;

and finally last month, she became president.

The reformulation of his interim presidency is still pending, an unprecedented change that the Government wants to make to provide Sánchez with all the powers of the position, without in this case having been endorsed by parliament.

Of course, the " agreement authorizing the modification of the Articles of Association

of the state trading company Corporación de Radio y Televisión Española"

has already been approved by royal decree law in the Council of Ministers .

Next year, eminently electoral, Elena Sánchez will foreseeably be the president of RTVE with the approval of the Government.

The new president is well regarded in Moncloa and before Pérez Tornero's resignation became official, she

held a meeting with representatives of the Executive

, according to sources consulted by this newspaper and familiar with the negotiations.

However, Sánchez can only assume an interim presidency, since his support does not come from Parliament, while Pérez Tornero was supported by more than two thirds of Congress (exactly 247 votes), with which he exceeded the necessary reinforced majority of two thirds (233) thanks to an agreement between PSOE and PP to which United We Can and PNV joined.
