The perpetrator, according to Israeli sources a 22-year-old Palestinian, fled to the nearby Shuafat refugee camp;

a full-scale search for him was underway on Sunday afternoon.

Prime Minister Jair Lapid said they "will not rest until we bring these nefarious killers to justice".

Several people were arrested.

Four Palestinian teenagers had been killed in Israeli military operations since Friday.

Two Palestinians, aged 16 and 18, were shot dead in the refugee camp in the city of Jenin on Saturday morning;

there had been numerous raids by the army against militant Palestinians in recent months.

According to the army, the soldiers opened fire after being shot at from a group and having explosive objects thrown at them.

A day earlier, two Palestinians, aged 14 and 17, were killed by the army in separate incidents in the West Bank.

There had also been several dozen wounded.

Demonstrations by Jewish settlers

A spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said the army's actions will further increase tension and instability.

Violent confrontations have increased sharply in recent months, especially after a series of terrorist attacks in Israel in the spring.

According to the United Nations, more than 100 Palestinians have died in Israeli military operations in the West Bank since the beginning of the year, the highest number since 2008.

Human rights organizations accuse the army of using excessive force and regularly killing bystanders.

The army says its soldiers are defending themselves against attacks.

Jewish settlers demonstrated Sunday at several West Bank intersections against what they saw as insufficient action by the army.

As days before, they blocked, among other things, an access road to the Palestinian city of Nablus, and they threw stones at Palestinian vehicles near Ramallah.

At the Shuafat checkpoint, clashes broke out between Palestinians and Israeli security forces.

Later on Sunday, the Israeli government wanted to discuss whether to lockdown the West Bank for the entire holiday week or just at the beginning and end as previously planned.

Tens of thousands of Jews are expected in Jerusalem during the week-long Feast of Sukkot, or Tabernacles, which begins Sunday evening.

The security forces were put on increased alert.
