The president may be a civilian or a military

Captain Traoré had declared on October 3 that he would only expedite "current affairs" until the appointment of a new transitional president - civilian or military - by the "Assises Nationales", indicating that they would hold "well before the end of the year".

These must in particular bring together representatives of political and social forces and of civil society.

Aged 34, Captain Traoré overthrew Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, himself came to power by force in January 2022 by overthrowing elected President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré.

Following a meeting on Tuesday with a delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), one of its members, former Nigerien President Mahamadou Issoufou, said that she left "confident".

The country's new strongman assured that Ouagadougou would continue to respect his commitments made under his predecessor vis-à-vis ECOWAS, in particular on the organization of elections and a return of civilians to power by July 2024 at the latest. .
