"National meetings" bringing together the living forces of Burkina Faso and having to appoint a transitional president before the organization of elections in this country, the scene of two coups d'etat in eight months, will be held on October 14 and 15, according to a presidential decree read Saturday, October 8 on television.

"In view of the adoption of the transition charter, a national meeting is convened on October 14 and 15" in Ouagadougou, indicates this decree signed by Burkina's new strongman, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, who took power there. a week ago and was appointed interim president.

Captain Traoré, who was officially appointed head of state on Wednesday, had declared two days earlier that he would only expedite "routine business" until the appointment of a new transitional president - civilian or military. - by "National Assizes", indicating that they would be held "well before the end of the year".

These meetings must in particular bring together representatives of political and social forces and of civil society.

Captain Traoré, 34, overthrew Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, who himself came to power by force in January 2022 by overthrowing elected President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré.

Following a meeting on Tuesday with a delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), one of its members, former Nigerien President Mahamadou Issoufou, said that she left "confident".

Captain Traoré assured that Ouagadougou would continue to respect its commitments made under Mr. Damiba vis-à-vis ECOWAS, in particular on the organization of elections and a return of civilians to power no later than July 2024.
