They were surprised to find "a big lizard" in their pool, as the firefighters of Pyrénées-Atlantiques tell on their Facebook page.

On Sunday, residents of Saint-Pierre d'Irube in the Basque Country, came face to face with a... savannah monitor, at the water's edge.

The animal had escaped from its terrarium located in the vicinity, and had obviously decided to take advantage of this sunny day.

Once alerted, the firefighters called on the animal technical advisor of Sdis 64, and a pair of specialists from the animal team was then hired to capture him.

The reptile was "in good health, although slightly hypothermic" and was returned to its owner thanks to its electronic chip.
