The man from Uppsala ran, together with other men, an extensive illegal manufacture of hookah tobacco and neglected to pay taxes.

The scheme was revealed through secret camera surveillance and when the Ecocrime Authority raided the men's premises, nearly 800 kilos of hookah tobacco were found.

He was sentenced last year to two years and nine months in prison.

But now it turns out that the man who was in the Svartsjöanstalten outside Stockholm was not the right person.

The convicted Uppsala resident must have paid a man to show up at the prison with a fake identity and serve time, according to SVT's information.

Investigated as wrongful detention

Director of Correctional Services Sandra Hultgren Stenström confirms that they have handed over the case to the section for special investigations at the Correctional Service.

- They are looking at what has happened and how it could happen, she says, but does not want to go into any details about what happened.

The incident is now being investigated as wrongful deprivation of liberty by special investigations.

But neither does the investigator want to give any more information about how long the wrong man was locked up or how it was discovered.
