This year's peace prize is awarded to Belarusian Ales Byalyatski, founder of the organization Viasna, the Russian organization Memorial and the Ukrainian Center for Civil Liberties.

It was already speculated that the war in Ukraine would play a role in the selection of this year's prize winner.

That the choice fell on these particular actors was a fine way to relate to the ongoing war, according to Isak Svensson, professor of peace and conflict research.

- To raise the role of civil society, to raise the work of democratic institutions, to document human rights violations in Ukraine for example, I think it was a very good choice, he says.

Kerstin Bergeå, chairman of Svenska Freds, shouted loudly when she heard the announcement.

She thinks it was a good choice by the Nobel Committee to reward civil society and lift up people who organize themselves.

- This is exactly how you should use the Nobel Prize, I think.

The laureate is appointed by the Norwegian Nobel Prize Committee, whose members are appointed by the Norwegian Parliament.
