In recent weeks, widespread protests have flared up in several cities in Iran.

The background is the death of the 22-year-old woman Masha Amini.

She was arrested by the Iranian morality police because her headscarf did not sufficiently cover her hair.

A few days later, she died in hospital and according to the family, she must have been subjected to severe violence to the head.

"No Hope"

Eskilstuna resident Roja Mahmoudi, who fled from Iran to Sweden in the 80s, has many relatives still in his homeland.

Before fleeing to Sweden, she participated in the fight for the Kurdish cause and in the women's movement.

She has seen many protests take off and be put down since she fled, but says today's protests are different because, she says, they unite all citizens.

- My task is to support their struggle and be a voice for them.

The young people living in Iran have no future, they have no hope, she says.

Roja Mahmoudi is today a member of the municipal council for the Left Party in Eskilstuna.
