The investigations into the Alcorcón fire, where a five-year-old boy died on Thursday afternoon and his 9-month-old brother and his mother were seriously injured, rule out that a gas explosion occurred in the commercial premises before the start of the fire .

According to what was discovered this morning, it all started when the workers who were working on the premises were using a radio.

The sparks ignited the polystyrene floor (plastic material with foam) that quickly burned causing the fire and the subsequent cloud of smoke that rose to the subsequent floors.

A woman, a neighbor on the third floor, left her home with her two children, five years old and nine months old.

The three fell unconscious and in cardiorespiratory arrest on the landing of the second floor, where they were found by firefighters.

Summa doctors revived the baby and the 30-year-old mother, but the five-year-old's heart did not beat again.

He had inhaled a lot of toxic smoke.

In the incident, 16 more people were injured, ten of them ended up hospitalized.

One of those evacuated to the hospital is a firefighter from Alcorcón.

Raúl Esteban, head of the Alcorcón Fire Department, has confirmed that there was no gas pipe and that the polystyrene ignited along with a flammable liquid that the workers were unable to put out.

At first, it was indicated that what had burned was rock wool that is used as insulation in the works of the commercial premises where a restaurant is going to be set up after the operators punctured a gas pipe.

The firefighters received the first call of the fire at 7:19 p.m. and at 7:26 p.m. they arrived at the site.

"We were very surprised by the explosive spread of the fire," several of the firefighters said today.

"Some source of ignition caused the polystyrene to catch fire and at one point there was a great combustion of the entire surface of the premises, producing that important deflagration," Fire Chief Raúl Esteban told Telemadrid.

The father of the two children went to the scene of the events and handed over the key to his house to the firemen, thinking that they were inside the house located on the third floor.

However, firefighters have confirmed that when climbing the stairs they saw a person who was down at the height of the second floor.

"When we lifted her up we saw that she was carrying two children," they have indicated.

The father of the deceased child is an Amazon employee and a neighbor of Ibahernando La Cumbre, a town in Cáceres, near Trujillo.
