At least 15 people have died when a refugee boat sank near the Greek island of Lesbos.

The dead were found after the sinking of a dinghy with about 40 people in stormy weather, the Greek coast guard said on Thursday.

Five people could therefore be saved, a rescue operation for three other inmates is still running.

The coast guard had previously reported the sinking of a sailing boat off the south coast of Greece.

Several refugees were therefore able to swim to the shore of the island of Kythira.

A search operation then found 80 other occupants of the unfortunate boat on land and at sea.

At the time of the accident there was strong wind in the area with wind speeds of up to 102 kilometers per hour.

Greece is often the first port of call for migrants from Africa and the Middle East on their way to Europe.

Thousands cross the Turkish-Greek border on the Evros River or risk the dangerous crossing of the Aegean Sea.

In the first eight months of this year, the Greek Coast Guard says it has already rescued around 1,500 refugees at sea, compared to fewer than 600 last year.
