Virginie Girod SEASON 2022 - 202305h00, October 06, 2022

Listen to the story of Andy Warhol, told by historian Virginie Girod, in an unpublished story in two episodes.

Andy Warhol established himself in just a few years as the king of the avant-garde in New York where he set up his Factory.

Warhol, the man who brought a unique look to Campbell's and Marylin Monroe soup cans, was then an icon.

But in private, he is a tormented and weakened man after an assassination attempt.

Why does he now start hanging out with millionaires rather than his artist friends?

And who are the men who will mark his life, from his first lovers to Jean-Michel Basquiat?

In this episode of the podcast "At the heart of history" produced by Europe 1 Studio, Virginie Girod traces the extraordinary destiny of Andy Warhol, genius of pop art.

At the end of the 1970s, in New York, Andy Warhol was more than an artist, he was a star.

But after his assassination attempt by the radical feminist Valérie Solanas, the man is weakened.

To the avant-garde artists he rubbed shoulders with in his Factory, he now prefers the rich and powerful to whom he can sell mass-produced pop art portraits at high prices, on the same model as Marylin Monroe or Elvis. Presley.

But behind the make-up and the splendor of the sequined costumes, no one seems to understand that Andy Warhol also wants to question gender in a still-corseted America.

Virginie Girod retraces the career of Andy Warhol, the king of pop art, capable of inventing and reinventing himself… until a banal surgical operation.

This story is a Europe 1 Studio production.

Topics covered: Andy Warhol - Marilyn Monroe - pop art - New York - Campbell soups - Elvis Presley - Valérie Solanas
