Israeli opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu was taken to hospital on Wednesday after he fell ill while praying at a synagogue in Jerusalem on the Jewish "Yom Kippur".

And private Channel 13 quoted Netanyahu's office as saying that the former prime minister felt unwell while he was in the temple to perform the final prayer on Yom Kippur.

Netanyahu, 72, underwent a series of tests at Shaarei Zedek Hospital, and the hospital reported that the opposition leader arrived at the medical center after his health deteriorated at the end of the Yom Kippur fast.

The hospital added in a statement that Netanyahu underwent an evaluation and a series of comprehensive tests, all of which were normal, stressing that "after consultations, it was decided that he would spend the night for observation."

For his part, his political rival, transitional prime minister Yair Lapid, said in a tweet on Twitter, "I wish Benjamin Netanyahu a speedy recovery and a full recovery."

Israel is due to elect a new parliament on November 1, and Netanyahu is seeking to return as prime minister after being ousted last summer.
