• The Nantes metropolitan area has only two emergency services: that of the CHU and that of the Confluent.

  • Thanks to larger premises, the Confluent emergency room will be able to take care of more patients.

  • Located between Nantes and Rezé, the Confluent private hospital belongs to the Vivalto group.

The work is finished at the Confluent.

Only two kilometers from the Nantes University Hospital emergency department, the emergency department of the Nantes private hospital (formerly NCN) inaugurated its new, enlarged premises on Tuesday evening.

The site, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, now has an additional 470 m2 out of a total area of 1,275 m2.

Objective: "to improve the reception and working conditions" and to be "able to respond to the demographic growth of the Nantes metropolitan area".

From 32,000 emergency admissions on average, the Confluent thus intends to increase to 40,000 before 2030.

Although smaller than its public counterpart at the CHU (126,000 annual visits), this private emergency service also experienced periods of congestion that it hopes to be able to reduce.

“The space had become too cramped in relation to our volume of activity,” says Didier Delavaud, general manager of Confluent hospital.

“More comfortable, less noisy”

Concretely, the entrances of people who can move by their own means and those of people brought by stretcher are now separated.

Additional boxes have been created.

A waiting room has been designed for families.

An outdoor awning has also been fitted.

The new premises are “more comfortable, quieter, less noisy.

They offer more privacy to patients,” says Benoît Burin, emergency doctor and president of the establishment's medical commission.

The 3.3 million euro project, financed by the Vivalto health group, was supported to the tune of 500,000 euros by the State.

"We have an efficient service that meets today's needs and can meet future needs," says Jean-Jacques Coiplet, regional director of the regional health agency (ARS).

The latter notes, however, that an emergency service is not "intended to see its attendance necessarily increase", insisting on the importance of "regulation" and "continuity of care" in order not to direct to emergencies than patients in genuine need of urgent care.

“Emergencies are overcrowded everywhere.

So if those of Confluent are able to absorb more activity, it's a good thing, ”comments Vincent Mével, CFDT Health-social union representative.

Sorting for profitability?

Contrary to popular belief, treatment in the emergency room of the Confluent private hospital is not more expensive for patients.

“Social Security coverage is the same” as in the CHU emergency room, explains Didier Delavaud.

It is the 15 (Samu) which directs the patients towards such or such establishment.

An approach which, however, does not convince the unions of caregivers.

, the CGT and the CFDT both argue that a “sorting of patients” is carried out in the emergency room of Confluent in order to “favor the most profitable hospitalizations for the establishment”.

“The CHU emergencies really welcome everyone,” insists the CGT.

"There is no sorting, it's an urban legend," replies Benoît Burin.

Only pediatrics under 15, medical gynecology and psychiatry are reoriented as part of a protocol with the University Hospital, says the emergency doctor from Confluent.

“All the other patients, we treat them at home,” he adds.

Some 80 people work in the Confluent emergency room.

The Loire-Atlantique department has five general emergency services: two in Nantes, one in Saint-Nazaire, one in Ancenis and one in Châteaubriant.
