• Saturated Nurse Needlesticks increase the risk of contracting hepatitis B, hepatitis C or HIV if any of the previous victims suffered from it

  • Society "I felt the prick instantly; I had dizziness, vomiting, I fell asleep..."

The

National Police

has received

120 complaints for punctures

and the

Civil Guard another 83

from May to the beginning of August, according to data from the

Ministry of the Interior

to which EL MUNDO has had access.

However, after carrying out toxicological tests, the

Security Forces

have not been able to identify the presence of chemical substances in any of the cases.

In this context, Interior assures that at the moment none of these episodes has been accompanied by another type of crime:

"None of the punctures has been related to the commission of sexual submission or aggression

", official sources from the Ministry affirm to this newspaper.

It should be remembered that this phenomenon originated in

the United Kingdom

and has spread throughout Spain during the summer months in discos, concerts, festivals and other leisure spaces.

According to quarterly data, up to August 10, both the National Police and Civil Guard agents investigated a total of

203 complaints

.

Due to the fact that the injected substances could not be detected,

Interior does not classify these cases under the name of chemical submission.

The conclusions of the Security Forces contrast with the content of the complaints filed by the victims.

"I started noticing that I was sweating a lot more than usual. I sat at the bar and told my friend I needed water. The symptoms were similar to being drunk. That's when I saw the puncture. At the time I thought I had stung a mosquito," says one of those affected in Valencia.

The 35-year-old woman was allegedly attacked at a party with her friends in the Carmen neighborhood.

Like many others, she went to the hospital hours after the events, but

no substance was detected in her body.

"Substances that can be injected subcutaneously such as ketamine, scopolamine, acids derived from LSD, have to be provided in large quantities to cause drowsiness or numbness," explains

Diego Ayuso

, general secretary of

the General Nursing Council

.

This specialist argues that the inoculation of these substances requires between 5 and 6 seconds.

For this reason, he assures that it is not so easy to do it without the victim noticing.

Likewise, he highlights that these practices carry

a risk of contagion of more serious diseases such as hepatitis D, C and HIV.

by not knowing the state of the needle.

"A behavior that seems harmless, funny has nothing and is a full-fledged aggression that puts a person's health at risk," she says.

The increase in complaints forced many autonomous communities to adopt measures in order to respond to this phenomenon.

Catalonia

and

Extremadura have been the first to activate the action protocols

both in the preventive phase of the puncture and in the subsequent phase.

The updated guidelines highlight the importance of calling 112, reporting and going to a health center as soon as possible to carry out a toxicological analysis.

In this case, the centers themselves will assess whether it is necessary to activate similar measures to prevent exposure to HIV.

"Before there was evidence of punctures due to chemical submission, we wanted to activate an alert that would be launched immediately before the phenomenon arrived," says

Ester Contreras Asturiano,

general director

of the Women's Institute in Extremadura

.

From the Extremaduran Board, they consider that, although the substance is not detected, it is a form of sexual and sexist violence.

In this context, it specifies that although it was not classified as chemical submission, it could constitute a crime of injury according to

article 147 of the Penal Code

.

"It is important that women feel heard and empowered to report," Contreras points out.

One of the greatest difficulties highlighted by the director is the monitoring of complaints made by minors.

"By depending on their parents to complete the claim, they are not within the

VioGén

system [comprehensive monitoring system in cases of gender-based violence]. For this reason, it is difficult for us to contact these people directly to follow up on the case. case," he explains.

She even affirms that for this reason in the sectors where there are a greater number of young people, greater security and attention have been established to avoid these events.

At the end of July, the

Ministry of Equality of Catalonia

drew up a health care protocol to standardize the medical services of those affected by this practice.

In addition, they worked together with Fecasarm

,

employers of entertainment venues, so that their staff, as well as taxi drivers or public transport drivers, knew how to act in these cases.

The

counselor Tània Verge

stresses that more importance should be given to the education of the aggressor instead of victimizing the affected young woman.

"The puncture is not the only form of sexist violence in public spaces nor the most frequent", she clarifies when warning about other more common crimes against women that are being normalized.

Social networks have acted as a loudspeaker when alerting about punctures.

Dozens of girls have shared their testimonies on platforms such as Twitter in order to encourage other punctured people to report, inform future victims about the protocol or remember the action steps.

"You always think that it will not happen to you. Now women live in fear because it seems that you can no longer go out in peace. This situation creates a lot of insecurity and fear

," says the attacked girl, highlighting why it is important to make known this phenomenon.
