Quantum physics in the spotlight.

The Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded on Tuesday 4 October to Frenchman Alain Aspect, American John Clauser and Austrian Anton Zeilinger, three pioneers of the revolutionary mechanisms of quantum physics.

The three researchers are rewarded for their pioneering work on "quantum entanglement", announced the Nobel jury, a mechanism where two quantum particles are perfectly correlated, regardless of the distance between them.

This centenary prize is endowed with a value of 10 million Swedish crowns (902,315 dollars).

The Nobel "season" opened on Monday with the awarding of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine to Swedish paleogeneticist Svante Pääbo.

The announcements of the Nobel Prizes for Chemistry (Wednesday), Literature (Thursday), Peace (Friday) and Economics (next Monday) will follow in the coming days.
