The Government empowers Elena Sánchez as president of RTVE and for this it modifies the statutes of the public corporation via royal decree.

The Council of Ministers has approved a change to facilitate the management of this journalist, who has replaced José Manuel Pérez Tornero at the head of the chain but for the time being had only interim functions.

Executive sources have explained to Efe that the decision had to be made so as not to leave Sánchez "with his hands tied" in his new job within the Board of Directors of RTVE.

A few hours earlier, Cuca Gamarra, spokesperson for the PP in Congress, had warned that a "maneuver" on this line would mean "a real scandal" and an "assault on public television and radio."

Elena Sánchez has been backed by Moncloa in this change in the leadership of the chain.

She was one of the four of the ten members of the board of directors of RTVE who had been proposed by the socialist ranks.

However, Sánchez no longer lent his support to Pérez Tornero, who had lost the majority of the council, channeled a large part of his decisions through his chief of staff (José Juan Ruiz) and also clashed with different strong men from the TV.

José Pablo López, director of General Content, and Pep Vilar, director of Informative Content, had had different disagreements with the outgoing president.
