• UN Sánchez defends "a political solution for the Sahara"

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, held a meeting this Tuesday at the

Palacio de Viana

with the personal envoy of the UN Secretary General for Western Sahara,

Staffan de Mistura

.

This is the fourth meeting that the minister has held with the personal envoy since his appointment in October 2021. In this meeting, Albares conveyed the support expressed by President Pedro Sánchez from the rostrum of the General Assembly of the Nations, on September 22 in New York, where he defended "a mutually acceptable political solution for the Sahara within the framework of the

Charter of the United

Nations and the resolutions of the Security Council".

In that speech by Sánchez, there was not the slightest mention of Spain's change of position on the conflict last March, when the Spanish government said for the first time that the Moroccan plan for autonomy was "the most serious, credible and realistic base" for the resolution of this dispute.

After his meeting with Mistura, Minister Albares reiterated to the personal envoy the importance of the work he is carrying out.

He has also reiterated that Spain will continue to make any resource available to him to facilitate it.
