A 40-year-old man was sentenced Friday to 20 years in prison by the Loiret Assize Court for attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend.

The facts date back to December 2019, in Ouzouer-sur-Loire, recalls France Bleu Orléans.

The accused had fired a shotgun at the victim, then aged 35, seriously injuring her in the arm.

He then turned the gun on himself in the presence of his two children aged 6 and 12.

He had shot himself in the head but had survived.

He then tried to hang himself in the garden and was finally arrested near the family home.

He challenged the voluntary homicide

The trial lasted three days.

The accused denied having voluntarily attempted to kill his ex-partner.

The Advocate General requested 15 years in prison.

The court finally got tougher.

The 40-year-old was also sentenced to 10 years of socio-judicial follow-up with a treatment order, a ban on contact with the victim and the obligation to repair the damage.

He also lost his parental authority.
