Editor's note:

85 years ago, the American journalist and author Edgar Snow wrote a book Red Star Over China after observing the arduous struggle of the Chinese Communists, which caused a sensation among Western readers.

In the vicissitudes of life in 1985, the red star in Snow's writings not only illuminated China, but also impressed the world with the shining light of the East.

On the occasion of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, in order to let history illuminate the future and let the world understand China better, China News Network launched a series of reports on "Why Red Stars Shine in China", inviting celebrities, expert think tanks and overseas Chinese to discuss China Ten Years of great changes, looking forward to the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and the future development of China.

Josef Gregory Mahoney is an associate editor of the American Journal of Chinese Political Science and a professor at the School of Politics and International Relations at East China Normal University.

Over the past decade, Mahoney has witnessed China's remarkable achievements in anti-corruption, digitalization, extreme poverty eradication, and green development.

Despite the current challenges facing the world, Mahoney is still full of confidence in China's future.

He firmly believes that China will do better in dealing with global challenges, and that after the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, China will be improved in many aspects: small and medium-sized enterprises will receive more policy support, and global security initiatives will continue to advance.
