The British Foreign Office summoned Iran's top diplomat to London on Monday over Iran's crackdown on protests linked to the death of Mahsa Amini in Tehran.

The protests have entered their third week since the 22-year-old died on September 16, days after she was arrested for breaking Iran's strict dress code.

Foreign Minister James Cleverly said he had asked his services to summon Mehdi Hosseini Matin.

"The violence exercised by the security forces on the protesters is truly shocking," he said.

“Taking responsibility for their actions”

"Today we made our point clear to the Iranian authorities: instead of blaming the unrest on outside actors, they should take responsibility for their actions and listen to their people" , added the head of British diplomacy.

“We will continue to work with our partners to hold the Iranian authorities accountable for these gross human rights violations,” he continued.

On Monday, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei accused enemy nations the United States and Israel of fomenting the protests.

This is the largest wave of protests in the Islamic Republic for almost three years.

Tehran's security forces violently repressed hundreds of students overnight from Sunday to Monday.
