The introduction program for newly graduated nurses has existed since 2016 within Region Västmanland and has undergone several revisions.

From the beginning, the program was a year which became half a year and will now become a year again.

What is new this time is that all newly qualified nurses who are employed within the region January-August 2023 will be included and will receive their own mentor.

- I hope that the nurses will feel satisfied in their work and that they will want to continue working in healthcare.

In the region where we are implementing the project, 20 percent of the new hires leave their first job within three years, says Margareta Asp who is associate professor and professor of health care science at Mälardalen University, MDU.

Hope for a good transition to professional life

Through the induction program, Margareta Asp therefore hopes that the nurses will have a good transition to professional life and that those who choose to stay will have the opportunity for skills and career development.

The program will follow four themes: role clarity, action, social integration and recovery.

- These four themes are particularly important for new employees to get a good introduction to working life, says Margareta Asp.

In the clip, Margareta Asp tells us more about the nurses' working situation and why the induction program is needed.
