A recent study conducted by the Emirates Oncology Society reported a decline in the incidence of advanced-stage breast cancer among women in the country by 3.1%, within four years, due to the growing awareness among women about the importance of early detection of the disease, and the efforts made by the state.

The head of the association and the main researcher of the study, Dr. Hamid Al Shamsi, explained that the main reason for the decrease in the number of advanced breast cancer cases in the country was the demand for early examination of the disease, which limited the development of cases and their transition to more dangerous stages.

He pointed out that the rates of breast cancer are the highest in the UAE among all cancers, accounting for about 36% of all types of tumors that affect women in the country, according to the data of the official cancer registry issued by the Ministry of Health and Prevention for the year 2019.

According to the study, the incidence of advanced-stage breast cancer was 10.1% in 2014, and the percentage decreased to 8.7% in 2015 and then decreased to 7% in 2017, equivalent to 3.1% during the total time period.

Al Shamsi stressed that the study, which was completed last month, is the latest that deals with breast cancer rates in the country, as it is known worldwide that cancer statistics and data appear after years.

The study indicated that there is an increase in the number of breast cancer cases in the country in general, as the number of cases reached 883 cases in 2019, compared to 768 cases in 2014, and this increase is a global phenomenon, as breast cancer has become the most prevalent tumor in the world. In 2020, lung cancer was previously the highest in the world.

Al Shamsi stated that 21% of women diagnosed with breast cancer in the country are under the age of 40, which is also an important phenomenon, as early cancer screening among women begins at the age of 40, while the percentage of women with breast tumors in the United States of America between the ages of 25 and 45 is 31%. While the injured are in the same age group in the UAE, 69%.

He continued, "The age of developing breast cancer for women in the country is 48, compared to the age of 62 in the United States of America." He added, "Breast cancer is the cause of 11.5% of tumor deaths in the country."
