THE ESSENTIAL

  • The Ukrainian army entered Lyman, a crucial railway junction in eastern Ukraine, in the Donetsk region on Saturday, whose annexation the day before by Moscow was strongly condemned by kyiv and the West.

  • Following the annexation of four Ukrainian regions by Moscow, kyiv has announced to seize the International Court of Justice.

Friday evening, Vladimir Putin had for his part concluded a day of ceremonies for the annexation of these territories.

  • These annexations make "much more difficult, almost impossible, the end of the war", estimated the head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell, calling on Europe to strengthen its military arsenal.

NATO denounced an "illegitimate" annexation, while the UN Security Council considered a resolution condemning "pseudo-annexations", which was immediately blocked by a Russian veto.

  • The Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, which connects Russia to Germany, no longer leaks under the Baltic Sea.

The Danish and Swedish authorities had estimated on Friday that the leaks on Nord Stream 1 and 2 should stop by Sunday, with the depletion of tens of thousands of tonnes of gas contained in the gas pipelines.

War in Ukraine: The Ukrainian army enters Lyman in an area annexed by Moscow

8:44 a.m.: Visit to Ukraine by the German Minister of Defense

The German Defense Minister made a surprise visit to Ukraine on Saturday, her first since the start of the Russian invasion.

Christine Lambrecht traveled to the port city of Odessa.

She notably met her Ukrainian counterpart Oleksiï Reznikov.

Ukrainian leaders have been asking the German government for weeks to allow the delivery of modern combat tanks that could make a difference against Russian troops.

No NATO country has so far supplied Western battle tanks to kyiv, which receives Soviet-designed equipment.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz says he does not want to act alone in the delivery of armaments and only take decisions in agreement with his Western allies.

A position reaffirmed on Saturday by the Minister of Defense.

08:27: The Ukrainian army recaptured Lyman

The Ukrainian army entered Lyman, a strategic town in eastern Ukraine, on Saturday.

This crucial railway junction is in the Donetsk region annexed the day before by Moscow.

Welcoming this tactical victory, Volodymyr Zelensky assured that next week, "new Ukrainian flags will fly over the Donbass".

The Ukrainian President also launched, addressing Russian soldiers and officials and referring to Vladimir Putin: "Until all of you solve the problem of who started it all, who started this senseless war against Ukraine , you will be killed one by one, becoming scapegoats, because you do not admit that this war is a historical mistake for Russia”.

08:19: End of leaks on Nord Stream 2

The Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, which connects Russia to Germany, no longer leaks under the Baltic Sea.

"The water pressure has more or less closed the pipeline, so the gas that's inside can't get out," Nord Stream 2 spokesman Ulrich Lissek said on Saturday. "The conclusion is that there is still gas in the pipeline”, he added, without being able to specify the quantity.

The Nord Stream 1 and 2 infrastructures, built to transport Russian gas to Europe, were damaged by underwater explosions off a Danish island in the Baltic Sea on Monday, causing extensive boiling.

Information regarding the status of the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline leak was not immediately available.
