The death toll in a mass crushing accident involving crowds entangled in an Indonesian professional football match has risen to 174.



Elastianto Dardac, the Lieutenant Governor of East Java, said in an interview with the local daily Compass that the death toll had risen to 174 and that more than 100 were in intensive care at eight local hospitals.



Eleven of those injured were seriously injured, he added.



Thousands of spectators stormed into the stadium after the match between 'Arema FC' and 'Persebaya Surabaya' soccer team held at Kanjuruhan Soccer Field in Malang Regency, East Java, Indonesia the day before.



After home team Arema lost their first home match in 23 years to Persevaya Surabaya, some angry spectators rushed into the stadium to protest the players and team officials.



Police fired tear gas in the process of suppressing the intruding crowd, and thousands of people rushed to the exit to avoid the tear gas and became entangled, leading to mass deaths.
