Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins

' pro-Western center-right party

won the elections in Latvia, while the sides supported by the large Russian-speaking minority of the Baltic state suffered severe setbacks.

With the count of almost all the

New Unity ballots (Jauna Vienotiba)

, the center-right party of Karins is in first place with 18.94% while the

Armonia party (in Latvian Saskana)

, winner of the elections of the 2018, traditionally supported by Russian-speaking people, may not have gotten enough votes to enter Parliament.

Just like the Latvian Union of Russians (pro-Kremlin).

A result that reinforces the position held so far by the Baltic country in foreign policy.

Regarding the

Russian threat

, Karins told AFP: "Neither I, nor my government, nor my country are reacting out of fear. (...) We will continue to invest in our defense as a

NATO

member state ," he added.

Former Riga Mayor Nils Ushakovs, now MEP, explained the poor result of his Armonia formation that by condemning the Russian aggression in Ukraine, he lost his bite with respect to his electorate.

"

Harmony

had to choose between acting responsibly or being a populist with national security and state interests, "he told LETA news agency." Some of our constituents stayed home, others dispersed into several new parties that they represent a different geopolitical orientation. "The situation has divided the Russian-speaking electorate.
