What if material shortages impact car manufacturing in the future?

This is the fear of Citroën, which has been working since 2019 on a brand new vehicle concept unveiled to the general public this Thursday.

The Citroën Oli concept car has no equal: this electric car is indeed made… out of cardboard;

It is a particular cardboard, designed by the engineers of the French manufacturer, with a honeycomb architecture and reinforcement on each side with a plastic coating.

Just because we have electric vehicles doesn't mean we couldn't go further.

A vehicle suitable for difficult times

Citroën wanted to imagine a durable and economical car model, made from affordable raw materials.

"It is clear that what we have experienced in recent years has further reinforced our intuition", explained the director of future products of the group, referring to the Covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine.

To go further, we went back to basics.

The Oli car was specially manufactured to last 50 years, and therefore be used for three generations.

Another special feature: the vehicle has a vertical windscreen to limit radiation inside the passenger compartment and reduce the amount of glass required.

Many innovations have been simply removed, such as remote door opening.

Back to the traditional key and windows that open manually!

The goal: to reduce the number of components needed to build the product, which thus weighs less than a ton and travels up to 110 km/h.

"It's almost the expression of new ways of life", according to the director.
