UK: Conservatives in turmoil

Thousands of Britons took to the streets of London on Saturday October 1, 2022 to protest the cost of living crisis, at times burning bills as the government somehow coped with fiscal policy after a week of market chaos financial.

Inflation at its highest, the pound sterling at its lowest, worries about the approach of winter.

More unpopular than ever, the Tories meet from Sunday in Birmingham for their annual congress.

But given the context, this high mass promises to be gloomy.

This Sunday, October 2, the 1st party conference begins in Birmingham, under the leadership of Liz Truss, appointed Prime Minister less than a month ago.

As the country faces a cost of living crisis, the latest government announcements have caused a financial storm.

But the new leader of the conservatives does not change course.

She intends to take advantage of this congress to establish her ideas.

Liz Truss will have to convince her detractors and since the announcement of the mini-budget by her Minister of Economy Kwasi Kwarteng.

Their number is growing.

The much-maligned measure: drastically reduce taxes in order to revive the economy, reassures Liz truss.

He is accused of above all bailing out the portfolios of the richest.

There are even criticisms from among the Conservatives.

For those close to Liz Truss, the country is going through an economic crisis, this is not the time for a new internal rebellion.

But some absentees say a lot about the current climate: several party heavyweights are staying away from the congress.

Among others: Rishi Sunak, main opponent of Liz Truss during the campaign and ex-Minister of the Economy, and Boris Johnson, the former Prime Minister overthrown last July.
