On Friday, Russia formally annexed the regions of Ukraine where mock votes on Russian accession have taken place.

The regions of Kherson, Zaporizhzhya, Luhansk and Donetsk are the areas where an "overwhelming majority", according to Russia, should have voted to join the country.

The people living in the regions will now experience changes, according to Jakob Hedenskog, analyst at the Center for Eastern European Studies.

He explains that the regions have been occupied for some time and that much has already changed, however, according to him, the annexation will further affect the population.

Russian curriculum

Among other things, the population will receive Russian passports and the currency will be changed to the Russian ruble.

Jakob Hedenskog also points out that the schools will change when a Russian curriculum is applied.

- Everything Ukrainian will be suppressed.

Ukrainian culture, literature and the Ukrainian language will be completely subordinated to Russian.

"Contrary to international law"

In addition, the people in the regions may be drafted into the war, according to Jakob Hedenskog.

- It has already been announced.

The mobilization decision, the mock polls and the annexations have coincided, it is no coincidence.

These people are to be conscripted and mobilized to fight for Russia, and that is a war crime.

He goes on to say that people will be forced to fight whether they want to or not.

- Under threat and coercion, you have to fight to survive.

It is completely against international law.

Previously annexed Crimea

Since Crimea was annexed by Russia in 2014, the indigenous Crimean Tatars and the Ukrainian population have been oppressed in the same way as the Ukrainian population will be oppressed now, says Jakob Hedenskog.

- Cultural institutions, radio and television stations have been shut down and many have been imprisoned and tried to leave Crimea.

He says that the big difference between the annexation of Crimea and the regions of Ukraine that will now be annexed is that Crimea had a majority of Russian inhabitants:

- One can assume that there was more sympathy for Russia in Crimea, it differs from the recently occupied territories.

See the three biggest changes that Jakob Hedenskog sees will affect the population of the player above.
