Thousands of Iraqis demonstrated today, Saturday, in central Baghdad, on the third anniversary of the Tishreen movement, which demands an end to corruption and party authority. Clashes erupted between protesters and security forces that closed the entrances to the fortified Green Zone in the center of the capital.

Al-Jazeera correspondent Younes Ait Yassin said that the Iraqi security forces fired tear gas canisters to disperse the demonstrators as they approached the concrete blocks at Al-Jumhuriya Bridge leading to the Green Zone.

He added that the situation was calm, but it became tense with the increase in the number of demonstrators, noting that they chanted slogans denouncing the political class.

In addition to ending corruption, the Tishreen movement demands an end to the authority of parties and the rejection of external interference.

closed bridges

Al-Jazeera correspondent in Baghdad said that the security forces closed the bridges of the Republic, Al-Sinak and Al-Ahrar in the center of the capital with cement blocks and barriers in anticipation of today's demonstrations.

The green zone in the capital is witnessing strict security measures;

Following government directives to strengthen security measures in the area by closing its gates and increasing the number of checkpoints inside the area, in addition to closing some roads leading to it, in anticipation of any emergency.

Last night, Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi gave strict orders to prevent the use of bullets and other illegal means in dealing with demonstrations, stressing the right to peaceful demonstration guaranteed by the constitution.

Al-Kazemi called on the demonstrators to cooperate with the security forces to preserve and protect state institutions and public and private properties.

The protests organized by the October movement come in the midst of a severe political crisis in Iraq, and one of the repercussions of the bloody confrontations that took place recently in Baghdad between Iraqi factions.
