In Iran, where anti-government protests are spreading over the suspicious death of a 'not wearing a hijab' woman arrested by the authorities, militants have stormed a police station, killing many.

According to Iran's state-run IRNA news agency on the 1st (local time), militants attacked a police station in Zahedan in the southeastern Sistan-Ba-Baluchistan province the day before.

Reportedly, they attacked a police station near the mosque after hiding among people attending Friday services.

At least 19 people were killed and 15 injured in the attack, according to eyewitnesses.

The state media described the men who attacked the police station as 'separatists', but did not specify who they were.

Sistan-Ba-Baluchistan, the province where the police raid took place, bordering Pakistan and Afghanistan, is the worst economically out of all 31 Iranian provinces.

In addition, on social media, a video was posted of protesters chanting slogans such as 'Death to the oppressors' in Abaz, the capital of the southern province of Khujestan, which borders Iraq.

Women took off their hijabs and protested, and cars joined by honking their horns.

In the course of the protests over the past two weeks, the authorities counted 43 dead, 500 injured, and more than 1,000 arrested.

But Norwegian-based human rights group Iranian Human Rights (IHR) put the death toll at 83.
