Virginie Girod SEASON 2022 - 202306:00 a.m., September 29, 2022

SPECIAL SERIES - The historian Virginie Girod completes her story around the story of the sinking of the Titanic, in a new series in 4 parts.

On April 15, 1912, around 2 a.m., there were 1,700 people left on board the liner sinking in the North Atlantic and only four collapsible rafts were still available.

Many passengers feel death approaching now.

Some even sing hymns.

Lord Bruce Ismay, the chairman of the White Star Line, should not board the last available lifeboats, a matter of honor.

But what choice will he make?

And what ghosts will he have to live with?

In this episode of the podcast "At the heart of history" produced by Europe 1 Studio, Virginie Girod retraces the last moments of the Titanic, its surviving passengers and all the others.

While the Titanic was on its maiden voyage in the spring of 1912, the ocean liner presented as unsinkable hit an iceberg in the middle of the North Atlantic.

A few hours after this terrible shock, the evacuation of passengers continues but time is now running out.

The minutes go by and the places in the lifeboats are fewer and fewer, says historian Virginie Girod.

Then suddenly the stern rises vertically and the keel finally gives way.

Passengers still on board now face death.

This story is a Europe 1 Studio production.

Topics covered: Titanic - boat - shipwreck - Great Britain - White Star line - Bruce Ismay - Thomas Andrews
