The Justice Commissioner of the European Union,

Didier Reynders

, has indicated this Thursday that "it would be better" for Spain to begin the presidency of the European Union in the second half of 2023 with the reform of the election system of the General Council of the Judiciary.

"I have mentioned that it would be better to start the EU presidency with a full implementation of the recommendations", underlined the high European president after having met with the ministers Félix Bolaños and Pilar Llop in the face of the judicial crisis that our country is going through.

In a meeting with journalists, Reynders has assured that he has obtained a "clear commitment" from both the Government and the Popular Party to renew the governing body of the judges and "immediately after" modify the system of election of the members of origin council judiciary.

The commissioner has emphasized that the commitment on the part of the political forces has been to meet both demands.

"Most of the members must be chosen by other judges, by their peers," said the European commissioner.

Reynders explained that he has traveled to Spain to discuss the EU's 2022

"I hope that this recommendation has been implemented in the 2023 report and that there has been a renewal and an achievement or at least an undertaking of the reform of the CGPJ," she added.
