The Iraqi parliament renews confidence in its president, Muhammad al-Halbousi

Today, Wednesday, the Iraqi parliament voted to renew confidence in its speaker, Muhammad al-Halbousi, with a vote of 222 deputies to reject the resignation, out of a total number of 235 deputies present.

A statement by the Iraqi Parliament's media department stated that the parliament held its session headed by Deputy Speaker Shakhwan Abdullah.

The candidate to form the new Iraqi government, Muhammad Shiaa al-Sudani, had announced that there were efforts to withdraw al-Halbousi’s resignation, referring to their vote to “reject this decision because al-Halbousi’s presence is very important in the parliament’s presidency as he is part of the state administration coalition.”

He added, in a televised statement, that "many deputies of the coordination framework reject the decision of al-Halbousi's resignation."

In a press statement, MPs of the Sovereignty Alliance, led by Muhammad al-Halbousi, renewed their adherence to the Iraqi parliament speaker remaining in his position and called on all political forces and independent representatives to refuse to resign and "work to give priority to the higher interests of the country and the rights of citizens."

According to Iraqi political sources, the parliament session will be devoted to renewing confidence in al-Halbousi and electing a first deputy speaker of the vacant parliament after Hakim al-Zamili resigned from the position along with the Sadrist deputies.

The Iraqi authorities took strict security measures at the entrances to the Green Zone, in the vicinity of Parliament, and on roads and bridges leading to Parliament.

On the other hand, Iraqi security sources reported that an officer and three members of the security forces were wounded by a missile attack on Wednesday targeting the Green Zone in Baghdad.

A senior Iraqi security source revealed that three Katyusha rockets fell inside the Green Zone in central Baghdad.

Today, the Iraqi News Agency (INA) quoted the source as saying that "three Katyusha rockets fell inside the Green Zone, one of them in the vicinity of the parliament building."
