The Iraqi parliament holds a session under strict security measures

Today, Wednesday, the Iraqi parliament will hold a regular session to vote on the request of Iraqi Parliament Speaker Muhammad al-Halbousi regarding the decision to resign from the presidency of the Iraqi parliament.

The Iraqi authorities took strict security measures at the entrances to the Green Zone, in the vicinity of Parliament, and on roads and bridges leading to Parliament.

The candidate to form the new Iraqi government, Muhammad Shia Al-Sudani, announced that there are efforts to withdraw Al-Halbousi’s resignation, and a vote against this decision will be made, because Al-Halbousi’s presence is very important in the parliament’s presidency as he is part of the coalition of the Iraqi state administration.

He added in a televised statement that "many deputies of the coordination framework reject the decision of al-Halbousi's resignation."

In a press statement, MPs of the Sovereignty Alliance, led by Muhammad al-Halbousi, reiterated their adherence to the Iraqi parliament speaker remaining in his position and calling on all political forces and independent representatives to reject the resignation and work to give priority to the higher interests of the country and the rights of Iraqi citizens.
