Blinken confirms US support for Europe after Nord Stream gas leak

The United States has confirmed its readiness to help its European allies on energy security, after monitoring cases of gas leaks in Nord Stream pipelines, and said it was looking into whether the cause was sabotage.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said the United States was looking into reports that the leaks were "caused by some kind of attack or sabotage."

He added: "If this is confirmed, it does not serve anyone's interest, and I knew that the leak would have little impact on energy availability in Europe."

"What is important is that we are working day in and day out, whether in the short or long term, to address energy security in Europe and, in this regard, around the world," he added.

He pointed to US efforts to speed up LNG shipments since the Russian war on Ukraine, at a time when Washington's allies, particularly Germany, are seeking to reduce their dependence on Russian energy supplies.
