The three factions of the red-green-red government coalition in the state of Berlin have spoken out in favor of setting up a body to correct electoral law.

It should submit proposals to the House of Representatives for legal and factual changes to the process of elections and votes by the Berlin population, as the parliamentary groups jointly announced on Wednesday.

In principle, the committee should meet in public.

An exception can be made for confidential consultations.

Among other things, expert hearings are planned.

The groups estimate six months for the work.

According to the proposal, the parliamentary working group should be formed by the Council of Elders and consist of eleven members of the House of Representatives who are nominated by the parliamentary groups.

In its work, it should in particular take into account the information to be expected from the Berlin Constitutional Court, the Senate's Expert Commission on Elections in Berlin and the Scientific Parliamentary Service of the House of Representatives.

There were numerous glitches in the election on September 26 last year.

These included incorrect or missing ballots, the temporary closure of polling stations and long queues in front of them, sometimes with waiting times of hours.

This Wednesday, the Constitutional Court is hearing about the validity of the election.

Berlin's top court is expected to make a preliminary assessment of whether all or part of the election needs to be repeated.
