Sofa is back!

After exploring the fall of the Berlin Wall with the year 1989, the landmark presidential elections of 1995 and 2002, it is now a mythical year that Etienne Carbonnier is tackling, with Canap98, broadcast on September 28 on TMC.

1998, “it was part of one of the first years we talked about” admits the journalist who can be found every evening on the Quotidien news program.

“But it was too obvious, we didn't want to do like everything that had already been done.

We waited a bit, and then after Canap89, we really wanted to do it because we are big football fans!

he adds.

One hour of broadcast, but months of viewing and selecting archives, rewriting… “Everything we select at the start, we will only keep half of it” estimates Etienne Carbonnier.

A return to the past all in the archives, coming both from the television news and programs of the time, but also from extracts from camcorders with the grain characteristic of the end of the 90's.

Probably the most beautiful of all the years.

Titanic, football and the 2Be3

On the program for this 98 edition, Le Canap returns to the greatest hits of this year, from Celine Dion to Johnny Hallyday;

great successes in the cinema with the theatrical release of the famous Titanic… The show also questions the media's passion for boy's band fans, 2Be3 in the lead: young girls are mocked for their passion, and singers ridiculed as figures brainless plastics.

A culturally intense year, which will remind some of their first booms… Or their techno evenings.

1998, a sporting year: the victory of the Blues at the Football World Cup is at the center of this return to the past.

"We tried to tell all that with something other than the goals we've seen thousands of times," explains Etienne Carbonnier.

Canap98 rather returns to the political atmosphere around the sporting event, Jacques Chirac and his

garden party

at the Elysée the day after the victory of the Blues, the fervor of the French in all the cities and villages... "We s' sees that all politicians take points of satisfaction following the victory of the Blues… Apart from Jean-Marie Le Pen” he notes.

1998-2022: Some things don't change...

Because beyond the nostalgia of an era without smartphones (the omnipresence of disposable cameras will make the youngest wonder), we see by going to the side of the past that certain things do not change.

“The subjects discussed at the Assembly are the same as last week!

Each time we make these broadcasts, we sometimes realize things have progressed, and others not…” notes Etienne Carbonnier.

This was the case, for example, with the debates around the PACS in 1998, which gave rise to demonstrations throughout the country.

Homophobic slogans, which will find an echo in the Manif pour Tous, in 2012. “There are plenty of things that seem much more shocking.

I did not remember that the debates were so stormy, for example, with Christine Boutin in tears in the hemicycle” adds the journalist.

A way of not idealizing the past, despite the ambient nostalgia.

“We're all a bit nostalgic, it's like looking at an old photo album.

Just the credits of television news, it brought back a lot of specific memories… In the show, there are a lot of images and few sets, the objective is to have an immersion in this era.

Generally, it reminds people of rather good memories, especially in 98” advances Etienne Carbonnier.

A summary of a golden era for some, to (re) discover for others.

It is to be seen on TMC and in replay this Wednesday, September 28, from 9:15 p.m.
