Nordic IVF in Gothenburg was one of the first in Sweden to offer women to freeze unfertilized eggs in order to have children later in life.

Previously, it was only possible to freeze already fertilized eggs.

In the past, public health care has offered egg freezing for medical reasons, for example before cancer treatment.

However, the technology used at the time meant that many eggs were damaged or did not survive the freezing, but thanks to the improvement of the technology in 2011, private clinics were also able to start offering egg freezing.

Possibility of getting pregnant

When the woman chooses to thaw the eggs, they are fertilized either through donated sperm or with a partner.

The fertilization itself takes place under a microscope and if the fertilization is successful, the woman is inseminated with the fertilized egg.

Can be expensive

The cost of freezing eggs is around SEK 40,000.

According to Anna-Lena Wennberg, studies have shown that it is just as possible to get pregnant with frozen eggs as with in vitro fertilization with fresh eggs.

But there are no guarantees that it will succeed.

- Even if you have many eggs in the freezer, there is no guarantee that there will be a child, but the younger you are, the greater the chance.
