After the victory of Giorgia Meloni's far-right Fratelli d'Italia party in the Italian legislative elections, the French presidency said on Monday that it respected the "democratic choice" of Italians and called on the future Italian executive to "continue to work together", by "Europeans".

"The Italian people have made a democratic and sovereign choice. We respect it," said the Elysee in a statement.
"As neighbors and friends, we must continue to work together," the presidential palace added.

"It is as Europeans that we will succeed in meeting our common challenges", insists the presidency again.
President Emmanuel Macron had praised the good cooperation with the outgoing Italian Prime Minister and former head of the European Central Bank (ECB) Mario Draghi.
Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne for her part stressed that France would be "attentive" to the "respect" of human rights and the right to abortion in Italy.
Giorgia Meloni, 45, campaigned under the motto "God, fatherland and family", raising fears of a retreat from Italy on the right to abortion and those relating to relations between people of the same sex.
