A police operation against drug gangs in Rio de Janeiro

has left three dead

and disrupted traffic on the city's main thoroughfares, forcing passengers out of their cars and onto the ground to

protect themselves from bullets.

The raid by the military police of Rio de Janeiro has begun at dawn in the

Maré favela, where some 130,000 people live

.

This favela is located in an important communications hub that connects the city with the international airport.

Aerial footage broadcast by Brazil's Record television network showed

police pointing their rifles

and running through stopped traffic while passengers hid behind cars and buses.

Traffic has now resumed. The police operation came six days before the first round of

presidential elections in Brazil

and highlights the security challenges facing many capitals.
