It's one of those questions that people are decidedly divided on.

Often even with yourself. Is it nice when automatic reminders of birthdays or milestones pop up on the digital device - and the people you shared them with are dead?

Or is it terrible because the loss is felt anew every time?

Possibly both.

Especially when you find out, for example on Facebook, that some people haven't even noticed the death of a person and cheerfully continue to send public birthday wishes with a "Let's see again".

Remembering, even on anniversaries, is a fine thing.

Some set up a website for the deceased, also to make a lifetime achievement accessible.

For the recently deceased Frankfurt filmmaker Helke Bayrle (1941-2022), wife of the artist Thomas Bayrle, it has existed for a long time, created in 2017. Helke Bayrle had made it her artistic long-term task with "Portikus Under Construction", the exhibitions of the Frankfurt Portikus to accompany and to capture the otherwise invisible.

More precisely: their structure, condensed into short films about the artists and their presentations.

She has been doing this with Isa Genzken since 1992. The last of the more than 150 contributions is dedicated to Jochen Lempert, who set up his photographs in March 2022.

All films are freely accessible on

Now it is an epitaph, vividly moved.
