Egypt will bid to host the 2036 Summer Olympics, if successful, it will be Africa's first Olympic host country

[Global Times Comprehensive Report] Egypt's youth and sports minister issued a statement on the 24th saying that Egypt will bid to host the 2036 Summer Olympics.

According to a Reuters report on the 24th, at a reception to welcome International Olympic Committee President Bach and his party to Cairo, Egypt's youth and sports minister said that President Sisi has approved Egypt's bid to host the 2036 Summer Olympics.

Bach said that Egypt's sports infrastructure can meet the requirements of hosting the Olympic Games.

If the bid is successful, Egypt will become the first Arab and African country to host the Olympics.

According to Egypt's "Daily News" report, Egyptian President Sisi met with the visiting Bach and his party on the 24th.

During the meeting, Sisi introduced Egypt's efforts to build modern sports infrastructure, including the construction of an international Olympic city in the new administrative capital, and improving the efficiency of international airports and transportation and communication networks.

Sisi said Egypt is capable of hosting various regional and world-class events.

Bach appreciated the recent development of Egypt's sports infrastructure and affirmed Egypt's success in hosting the World Men's Handball Championships last year despite the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bach also said he had full confidence in Egypt's ability to host world-class events, and called the International Olympic City, located in Egypt's new administrative capital, one of the most important sports facilities in the entire Middle East.

The three Summer Olympics until 2036 have all been confirmed as host sites.

The 2024, 2028 and 2032 Summer Olympics will be held in Paris, France, Los Angeles, and Brisbane, Australia, respectively.

In 2019, the International Olympic Committee adjusted the Olympic bidding process, allowing multiple cities, regions and even countries to jointly bid for the Olympics, and the time when the IOC decided to host the host city has become more flexible.

For now, the IOC may decide between 2025 and 2029 on the final ownership of the 2036 Summer Olympics.

In addition to Egypt, cities and regions in countries such as India, Russia, Spain, Turkey and Ukraine have expressed their intention to bid to varying degrees. Berlin, Germany is even discussing a joint bid with Tel Aviv, Israel.

But so far, no official application has been made by either party.

Previously, Cairo, the capital of Egypt, had bid for the 2008 Summer Olympics, but did not enter the shortlist for the final competition.
