No one has yet been detained after the explosions that occurred in Huvudsta and Södermalm on Thursday and Friday.

- The connection is that they occurred with a very short time interval, but it is a connection enough, says Ola Österling, press spokesperson at the Stockholm Police.

He cannot answer whether information has emerged about possible connections between the two events, the matter is currently covered by preliminary investigation confidentiality.

- If that is so, it is nothing that has been presented to me, says Ola Österling.

In both cases, the properties suffered extensive damage and residents had to be evacuated due to a suspected racial risk.

In connection with the damage being repaired, the evacuees are now allowed to return home.

The affected stairwell at Södermalm is still closed.

A resident with whom SVT has been in contact states that the property owner Svenska vodasta estimated that a return move is possible at the end of the week at the earliest.

Reversing trend

In recent years, the number of explosions has fallen in Sweden.

After a peak in 2019, with 133 explosions, the number dropped to 107 the following year and in 2021 it landed at 79, according to the Police Authority's statistics.

The question is whether the downward trend will be broken this year.

Up until September 15, as far as the police statistics on the matter extend for 2022, a total of 68 explosions had taken place around the country.

And after that, at least four detonations have taken place.

The fact that explosions have decreased in recent years may have several reasons, but changes in trends in the criminal world have previously been pointed out as a possible explanation.

There is often a connection to gang crime, according to Manne Gerell, criminologist at Malmö University.

- Shootings and explosions are partly about the same thing, it is often about conflicts within or between criminal environments.

More conflict will lead to more shootings and explosions, but it is also a question of trends and availability of capabilities and bombs, he says.
