Accompanied by winds of up to 195 km / h, super-typhoon Noru is expected to hit the coasts of the densely populated island of Luzon this Sunday evening, about 80 km from Manila, the capital.
The Philippines is hit about 20 times a year by typhoons, but Noru is causing concern as it quickly went from
typhoon
to super-typhoon.
The speed of the winds accompanying the climatic phenomenon increased by 90 km / h in just 24 hours, an "
unprecedented
" intensification , estimated the weather forecaster Robb Gile.
According to the National Weather Service, the wind speed could reach 205 km / h by the time the super-typhoon, born in the Pacific Ocean, makes landfall.
The organization therefore alerts the population, because floods, landslides and strong storm surges could affect the affected regions.
Ongoing evacuations
For their part, the authorities of the Philippines have begun to evacuate the population of the coastal cities.
“
We are asking residents of endangered areas to obey calls to evacuate when necessary
,” said Philippine Police Chief General Rodolfo Azurin.
Schools will remain closed on Monday and maritime traffic has been suspended.
In the capital, heavy rain and strong winds are expected, but no neighborhoods were evacuated on Sunday morning.
During the passage of super-typhoon Raï, in 2021,
several dozen people were killed.
Experts said the typhoon is expected to weaken as it passes over the island of Luzon, before moving away into the South China Sea on Monday towards Vietnam.
