South Korea and the US military authorities detected a short-range ballistic missile that North Korea fired from the Taecheon area in North Pyongan Province at 6:53 am today into the East Sea.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff said it was detected at an altitude of about 60 km, a flight distance of 600 km, and a speed of Mach 5.

Kim Seung-gyeom, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Combined Forces Commander Lacamera held a joint meeting and reaffirmed that they would further strengthen the defense posture through the already scheduled combined naval exercise, the Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

Next week, in the East Sea, a large-scale joint exercise involving the US carrier strike group will be held for the first time in five years.

To this end, the US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, the Ronald Reagan, is moored at the Busan Operation Base.

North Korea's ballistic missile launch is the first in three months since June, and it appears to be an armed demonstration against the South Korea-U.S. joint exercise.

The Presidential Office immediately reported the matter to President Yoon Seok-yeol, and said that the NSC Standing Committee was held to discuss countermeasures with Kim Seong-han, head of the Security Office.

The NSC Standing Committee said that it would actively respond in cooperation with the United States and its allies, noting that it is the first ballistic missile launch since North Korea announced its enactment of a nuclear force policy that formalized the preemptive use of tactical nuclear weapons.
