Hurricane Fiona turns into a tropical storm in Canada

Tropical Storm Fiona, downgraded from a hurricane, headed north on Sunday as it continued to lose strength gradually, after hitting the coast of eastern Canada, missing a woman and leaving more than 500,000 homes without power.

Fiona reaches the Labrador Sea with winds of 80 km per hour and continues with strong winds in northern Newfoundland, southeast Labrador and areas in southeastern Quebec, according to the Canadian Hurricane Center, and wind speed will decrease later today.

In Newfoundland County, two women were washed away.

One of the two victims whose house was destroyed by the storm was treated and taken to hospital, while the other is still missing.

The storm uprooted trees, swept homes and destroyed power lines, cutting power to nearly 500,000 homes in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Novo Brunswick.
