“Of course, both the Council and the UN as a whole must be adapted to modern realities,” he said.

According to him, the Russian side sees the prospects for democratizing the work of the UN Security Council solely through expanding the representation of the countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America. 

"We especially note India and Brazil as key international players and worthy candidates for permanent membership in the Council - with the obligatory simultaneous increase in the profile of Africa," Lavrov stressed.

Earlier, US President Joe Biden called for an increase in the number of permanent members of the UN Security Council.

In response, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said that Russia has long been in favor of expanding the composition of the UN Security Council.
