Shortly after midnight on Saturday, residents in the usually quiet area were awakened by a bang.

- At first I thought it was the war that had come, it was a huge explosion, says neighbor Monica Nielsen on Saturday morning.

No one has been injured, according to Annika Laestadius, acting local police area manager for Södermalm.

- You can see that it was a powerful detonation with major damage to the building, so it is clear that we are taking it seriously, she says when SVT meets her next to the crime scene.

No people have been arrested.

One person was taken during the night for questioning - but is no longer in custody.

Unclear when residents can return home

The people living in the affected stairwell have not been able to return, the police said at 6pm on Saturday.

- The investigative work continues.

We have to make it clear before we let in people who can accidentally destroy evidence, says Towe Hägg at the Stockholm police command center to SVT.

About 20 of the property's 169 apartments were evacuated, the landlord Svenska Bostäder confirms.

"We know that around 70 windows will need to be repaired, the entrance door is destroyed, there is damage to the entrance and to the elevator as well as some other damage," stated Stefan Mattsson, district manager of the inner city at Svenska Bostäder, to SVT on Saturday morning.

Connection between detonations is being investigated

Saturday's explosion was the second explosion in the Stockholm area within just over 24 hours.

The police are now investigating whether there is any connection between the explosions.

- There are two powerful detonations where, thankfully, we have no injuries, but which could very well have caused major injuries to people, says local police area manager Annika Laestadius.
