This is reported by the ERR portal with reference to police officer Riita Proozu.

She noted that the time frame for the surrender of weapons was not announced.

According to preliminary data, when the law comes into force, about 1,300 permits to carry weapons will be invalidated, half of which were issued to Russians.

“I can’t give specific numbers, but some gun owners have already begun the process of alienation,” Proosa added.

Earlier media reported that the Union of Gun Owners is proposing to amend the law on weapons, according to which only Estonians, citizens of EU and NATO member states, will be allowed to own them.

The organization also called for the immediate suspension of relevant weapons permits issued to citizens of Russia or its allies.

The Russian ambassador to the republic, Vladimir Lipaev, on the air of Rossiya 24, noted that the atmosphere of Russophobia is being whipped up in Estonia by the efforts of the country's leadership.
